This Place Matters Photo Contest: Third Place!

Helping people protect, enhance, and enjoy the places that matter to them.

Hugh Smalling The National Trust for Historic Preservation initiated a photo contest called This Place Matters to highlight the importance of preserving historically relevant landmarks. A photo submitted by Historic Riverside Cemetery Conservancy was chosen by judges as one of 12 finalists for this contest out of the almost 2,000 submitted. After two weeks of public voting online we garnered 11% of the thousands of votes submitted to win third place!

The photograph of Hugh Smalling's grave was taken by Maryann Bates. In the photo, Hugh Smalling is represented by local actor Anthony Ennis. Hugh Smalling's ship was sunk off the coast of Salerno, Italy in 1943. His is one of the stories highlighted on tours and educational programs in Riverside Cemetery, where history lives!
