About Us

The role of many of the nation’s historic cemeteries is changing – from functional burial properties to “outdoor museums” of histories significance and park-like areas where beautiful examples of architecture, art, and horticulture are preserved. Historic Riverside Cemetery in Macon, Georgia, opens wide its gates to families and individuals who wish to enjoy its serene, beautifully-landscaped grounds, footpaths, roads and vistas.

Following is a short film about The Conservancy.

Purpose

The Historic Riverside Cemetery Conservancy was created to assist with the cemetery’s historic preservation and aesthetic improvement, and to serve as the community outreach arm and the fundraising arm of the cemetery.

Through educational programs and special community-wide events, the Conservancy’s board of directors invites visitors in Middle Georgia and beyond – whether or not they have loved ones interred here – to enjoy the beauty and rich history of the cemetery. It also assists in preserving the cemetery for future generations and for the Macon community-at-large while continuing to serve the needs and wants of those who own interment property here.

Ambitions

The Conservancy’s outreach and preservation efforts are funded through endowments, corporate donations, grants, charitable gifts, individual contributions and memberships. Specific projects include enhancements such as:

  • Restoration of original Calvert Vaux* landscape design
  • Addition of benches and garden areas
  • Historic signage
  • Road construction and improvement
  • Planting of perennial beds
  • Columbarium additions

*Calvert Vaux also co-designed Central Park in NYC
